Jana Broder's Drum Magic is the Antedote to Stress, and Teambuilding

by Kathy L. Collins, at the Osprey Observer

The world seems to be a much harder, coarser place than it used to be especially in business. Everyone seems more stressed than ever before even children. What’s the solution? Jana Broder of Drum Magic will show up with enough Aftrican drums called,
“djembes” and chairs for all those stressed out people.

Broder started Drum Magic after experiencing it first hand in Berkeley, California. Broder, a certified drum facilitator, started Drum Magic in 2001. Drum Magic comes to your event with enough drums and trained facilitators to head a group on a positive and
exciting shared rhythm experience. A typical 45 minute team building session can range from $350-$1,000. According to Broder, the perfect size for a drum circle is 50-200 participants. “With this size, the experience is personal yet invigorating,” says Broder.

A drum circle is basically music therapy taken to a whole new level. “There is a lot to be said for a good 30 to 40 minute team building activity that starts with everyone on the same level- beginners,” said Broder. “My profession as Drum Circle Facilitator allows me to see firsthand how the walls of disconnection can start coming down and the reconnection begins. The first step is to
stop talking and start listening to each other through an alternative form of communication,” Broder added.

Drum circles are not limited to just corporate settings. The activity lends itself well to children, handicapped people and the elderly. It also is very popular at colleges and festivals. Why? Broder explains, “Unlike physically demanding teambuilding activities, hand drumming can be done by anyone no matter their physical limitations. With simple instruction and a good facilitator, the experience is always positive.” Broder further explained, “Just the physical sensation of striking the skin of the drum with your hand is very freeing and sends a vibration through your whole body. But even more important is watching others strike the drum with you. That’s what makes each group so unique.”
